Coming Out

The term "Coming Out" (or "Coming Out of the Closet") means letting others know that you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning. Many people don't come out until they are adults simply because the coming out process can seem like a scary thing; But in the long-run, coming out has many benefits. For example, the process itself can strengthen relationships and improve self-esteem. It's a very personal decision to come out, but it can also be extremely powerful! It gives individuals a better understanding of their personal self by accepting and valuing their own sexual orientation and identity.

Overall, it is you and only you that can decide if and when to come out. You decide who, how and when the right time is for you...and when you do decide, there are two very important things to keep in mind: First - make sure you always have a support system like a friend or family member to talk to, and Second - be informed...don't let others tell you how you should feel or act. Read as much information as you can about others like you who are also in the process of coming out, or did come out already!
