Take Charge of Your Health

Taking care of your own health needs is something that a lot of teens may be unfamiliar with. Knowing all about health insurance, coordinating your own doctor’s appointments, and anything else about your personal health services are usually your parents’ concerns, right? Not anymore! It is imperative that we change this and take charge of our own health to become more independent in our adolescent lives. In this Healthcare section, we have so much information on topics from health insurance to teen self-advocacy, as well as many links to other resources that are so helpful for you to use when learning everything about healthcare. Be sure to click on the other pages for more information!

“Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) students and families who call the hotline will speak with an HK registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (APRN). The nurse will perform a basic triage assessment over the phone regarding the caller's health concern or question about their child. The caller may receive basic health advice or information and, with parental consent, the student may be scheduled for a telehealth visit with an HK nurse practitioner. Nurses staffing the hotline have been working in schools statewide and are familiar with many families and students. Families may request to make an appointment with a specific HK nurse practitioner.” -HIDOE
