Suicide is a very difficult subject to talk about...but one of the most effective medicines for this feeling of desperation has been to talk to someone.
Being able to talk to someone who is trusted is critical. Talking to someone who is trusted can open the doors to healing. Some one who is considered "trusted" doesn't always have to be a person you know...it can also be a stranger on the other side of the phone. It is for these reasons that the ACCESS LINE and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline were created.
If you or someone you know is in need of any help, call the Crises Line of Hawaii: 832-3100 for Oahu and 1-800-753-6879 for neighbor islands.
You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Help is available and recovery is possible! Suicide is 100% Preventable!
It's also very important to arm yourself with all the tools needed to prevent suicide. Educating yourself on the risk factors is just as important as talking about it.
According to a national survey of youth in high school, Hawaii has the highest rates of attempted suicides, making a plan, or having thoughts of suicide - in the country.
During 2009 in Hawaii there were 27 deaths by suicide of young people between the ages of 12-24.
Teens in Hawaii are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide when compared to youth elsewhere in the US.
